The Great Toddler Escape: A Long Weekend in Turkey
As a parent of young children, the idea of a vacation can be both tantalizing and daunting. You crave a break from the relentless routine, but the thought of traveling with toddlers might seem like a herculean task. Well, I'm here to tell you about our family's daring adventure to Turkey for a long weekend and why it was surprisingly worth it.
The Exhaustion is Real
Let's be honest, being a parent to toddlers is exhausting. The constant energy, the sleepless nights, and the never-ending demands can leave you feeling like a shell of your former self. Add to that the challenges of moving houses and undergoing medical procedures, and you have a recipe for parental fatigue. This is the reality many parents face, and it's essential to acknowledge it.
Why Turkey?
When planning a short getaway, you want a destination that offers warmth, convenience, and a change of scenery. Turkey ticked these boxes for us. With a four-hour flight, it was far enough to feel like a proper vacation but not so far that it would be a logistical nightmare. Plus, we wanted to avoid the complexities of traveling to certain regions due to current geopolitical tensions.
Surviving the Journey
Traveling with toddlers starts with the journey itself. We opted for an early flight, which, while challenging, had its perks. The new security scanners at Gatwick made the process smoother, and we were grateful for the lack of queues at the airport. The flight was a mixed bag, as expected, with one child napping and the other full of energy. But the presence of other understanding parents made it bearable.
Choosing the Right Accommodation
For a short break, the choice of accommodation is crucial. I believe it's essential to set realistic expectations and not overburden yourself. In this case, we opted for an all-inclusive resort, XO Cape Arnna, which turned out to be a brilliant decision. The resort offered stunning scenery, a range of activities, and, most importantly, a stress-free environment.
Catering to the Kids
XO Cape Arnna was a paradise for our children. From the beach and slides to the small waterpark, it had everything a toddler could dream of. The resort exceeded our expectations, providing a teepee in our room, evening entertainment, and even a trapeze! The hidden gem was Flamingo Beach, with its gentle gradient into the water and a dedicated toddler play area.
However, I must admit, the kids' club left me feeling a bit disheartened. While well-equipped, the lack of supervision and the focus on indoor activities, including video games and vlogging, didn't sit well with me. It's a reflection of the modern challenges of parenting, where screen time often takes precedence over outdoor exploration.
Parents Need a Break Too
What sets XO Cape Arnna apart is its commitment to catering to both children and adults. The resort offers an adults-only area with a pool, bar, and restaurant, providing parents with a much-needed sanctuary. The buffet restaurant caters to all tastes, but the à la carte restaurants offer a more refined dining experience, allowing parents to indulge in tasting menus while the kids enjoy kid-friendly options.
Managing Time Differences
One of the challenges of traveling with young children is managing their sleep schedules. Interestingly, the late opening times of the à la carte restaurants at 7 pm worked in our favor due to the time difference. We kept the kids on British time, ensuring they were ready for dinner at 5 pm UK time, which was 7 pm in Turkey. This simple adjustment made our evenings more enjoyable.
The Verdict
Despite my initial doubts, the long weekend in Turkey was a success. The all-inclusive resort provided the perfect balance of activities and relaxation, ensuring we returned home feeling refreshed, even if only momentarily. It's a testament to the fact that sometimes, a short break is all you need to recharge and reconnect with your family.
In my opinion, the key to a successful family vacation with toddlers is finding the right balance between activities, relaxation, and catering to the needs of both children and adults. While it may seem daunting, with the right planning and mindset, it can be a rewarding and memorable experience.
